Green IT
Green IT can be seen as the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently, coming to the forefront with increasing environmental issues and legislation.
Modern IT systems rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of this solution may comprise items like end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste, telecommuting, virtualisation of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and return on investment (ROI).
This e-Symposium will explore the above areas and more in order to explain how Green IT initiatives are now in the mainstream.

ITIL v3 defines “IT Service Management” as “The implementation and management of Quality IT Services that meet the needs of the business”. This presentation investigates how the “needs of the business” directly translate into real Green IT challenges to those involved in ITSM. Business needs include a fundamental obligation on IT to ensure effective utilisation of the organisation’s investment in IT, and also include the need for IT to deliver on its responsibilities towards the organisation’s overall Corporate Social Responsibility commitments. Green, or “Eco” IT is therefore fundamentally about both “Eco-logy” and “Eco-nomics”. From an IT Service Management perspective, Green IT requires those involved in ITSM to be prepared and able to take responsibility for ensuring that each IT service in the portfolio is designed, built and operated in a manner that is efficient and effective from both an ecological and economic perspective.

Implementing Green IT projects will have the same risks and challenges that are common to all projects. As a PMP and ITIL V3 Expert (and V2 Service Manager), I will identify how to integrate Green IT projects using the PMBoK and ITIL Version 3. This will include: Brief overview of ITSM lifecycle - Brief overview of the PMBoK knowledge areas that must be integrated with the ITSM Lifecycle - Differences between Change and Configuration Management of the two frameworks - Risks and challenges that these differences impose on projects and how they can negatively impact the desired business outcomes - Propose some recommendations for integrating the PMO and ITSM organization to achieve the business outcomes and deliver successful Green IT projects.

With the worldwide focus on energy consumption and the environmental impact, it is critical that we understand new methods for evolving our data centers to be more “green.” The demand for energy coupled with the exponential growth in power costs are all contributing to the realization that managing energy is of critical importance in today’s data center. This presentation will show how you can adopt new approaches to optimize energy consumption, support space-saving virtualization initiatives and reduce your overall carbon footprint. It will describe how you can aggregate power consumption data, determine cost of power, set a benchmark for energy usage to better track improvements, and report on the amount of power consumed, when it was consumed and which services consumed it.
During the roundtable discussion, these leading experts will debate 'Green IT'. As with all sessions, you can ask the panel live questions.
